Factors that Impact Energy Use of a Building
Energy efficiency goes far beyond insulating and sealing air leaks. Although as much as 40% of a building’s energy use is wasted due to air leaks and air infiltration, it’s important to view a home or building as one energy unit, and consider how all parts of a home work together to make it either more efficient or less efficient.
There are several tests to evaluate a building’s unique factors that impact energy use. These services include:
- Blower door testing – A blower door is a diagnostic tool used to measure how much air filters out of your house. This helps determine how much air sealing should be done to minimize air infiltration to make your home as energy efficient as possible. The blower door is temporarily installed to the front door of the house and applies consistent, measurable air pressure to the house. This provides the individual testing of the home to recommend the best energy solution.
- Duct leakage testing – If your home has a forced air HVAC system, it’s important to know if your ducts leak conditioned air. Leaky ducts prevent conditioned air from reaching the desired destination. This causes your HVAC system to work harder than necessary to keep your home at the desired temperature. Duct leakage testing is similar to blower door testing. Consistent air pressure is applied to the ducts to determine where conditioned air is escaping. Properly sealing duct leaks can quickly make your home more energy efficient and comfortable.
- Infrared scans – An infrared scan uses an infrared camera to evaluate energy loss around the perimeter of the home. The camera detects energy loss and converts that energy loss to a thermal image. Infrared scans are a great way to visually demonstrate areas around a home that can benefit from energy upgrades such as insulating and air sealing.
